A Glimpse into the Life of Briar Wildwood

Wow! It has been a loong time since I last posted! Too long, I'm afraid. To be honest these last few months I was feeling very uncreative and unmotivated in regard to Sylvanians. I did, however still make a couple of second-hand purchases off TradeMe; some Thistlethorn mice, which I have always wanted, and a Wildwood rabbit.
So without further ado, I would like to introduce you to Briar Wildwood.  : )

One of the meanings of 'briar' is wild rose. Alongside the fact that her last name is 'Wildwood', no one in Bluebell Oaks or the surrounding area could perhaps have a more fitting name than Briar Wildwood herself!

Let me tell you why...

Briar has always had a strong desire to be outside. As a little girl she had trouble sitting still inside a classroom, despite being a fairly bright student. At high school, her art class soon became her main outlet for her headstrong and creative nature.
As she approached her last school days, everyone had different ideas about what path she would choose. Her art teacher, naturally, wanted her to apply for the some of the best art colleges in Sylvania. Her biology teacher thought she might go on to study zoology or botany. Her parents were expecting her to go off to university or possibly become a horticulturist.
She shocked them all by choosing not one of their ideas. Instead, she moved out and became an artist straight out of school. She told her upset art teacher that she couldn't stand another three years of sitting in a college clasroom.

She lives in a rundown old caravan in the woods, where the river hums gently nearby and there is nothing but her and the trees and the flowers and the birds, and the crickets that sing her softly to sleep every night.

Her parents were more than a little distraught. But her father had always said: 'Briar will be as free as a rose,' and he was right. She always was a little more untameable than her other siblings.

Briar can spend hours just sitting at her easel in the woods, working up a storm. She spends almost everyday off somewhere in the woods around her caravan with her paints. It's just as well she never seems to get lost, because if she did, no one would be able to track her down.

When Briar first bought her caravan, it was so rundown and that's what made it so cheap. It still isn't top notch, but Briar decorated it herself with her own design and flair. She likes the slightly rustic feel of it.

The walls were too plain so Briar felt the need to decorate them herself. It felt much more homely and brighter when she had added some of her own possesions and artistic talent.

Her bed is the window seat, which doubles as the couch. It's surprisingly comfortable despite being abit lumpy.

Briar gets asked often if she feels lonely out in the woods all by herself. And the truth is, although she does miss her family, she doesn't feel lonely.

Ever since she could hold a pencil, her favourite thing to draw has been a rose. Now, at 20, she has rather mastered it, but she never tires of drawing her good old friend, the rose.

Her old school books are covered in drawings, sketches and doodles of plants and flowers, alongside masses of pencil drawn roses.

She also decorated the bathroom herself, going with a blue theme.

Every morning she likes to sponge her face with cold water to wake herself up.

Briar keeps the place clean and tidy, especially her little kitchen.

Her baking skills aren't too bad, although she doesn't mind eating burnt toast or stale bread from time to time.

Most of her food, she collects from the woods. Briar finds something so refreshing in living off the bounty of the land, almost like it is one more step towards total freedom.

There is something inside her that seems to come alive when she is out in the woods painting.

She never runs out of inspiration and beautiful places to set up her easel.

Why is it that she has always felt more at home with the wind in her fur, roaming the land, than at home or in the village shopping with the other girls? Nature never seems to present her with any of the kind of worries she used to face.

Sometimes in the evenings after dinner, Briar does a little bit more painting, just outside the caravan before it gets too dark to see.
When the daylight has faded she brushes her teeth and goes to bed. She likes to sleep with her windows open so the crickets outside can sing her their lullaby more clearly. Often the gentle symphony is accompanied by the note of an owl.

Every now and then when painting is finished for the day, Briar will spend the afternoon just walking in the woods. As a little girl she used to love exploring the forest near their house, and her heart still pounds for adventure.

Sometimes, when the wild mushrooms are in full bloom or the berries are ripe, she takes her basket and collects what she can of the food nature provides for her.

This autumn the berries are particularly huge.
There will be blackberry pie tonight for sure, and probably for the days to come as well!

Sometimes, when Briar is sitting on the riverbank in the late afternoon sun, dangling her feet in the cool water, she thinks about what her life might be like now if she had taken another path when she left school. If she had bowed to the expectations of her teachers and parents, her life would be very different.
It took awhile for her art to supply her with enough of an income, but in the last few months it has started to take off. In fact, the demand for her paintings in the village is really blossoming.
Looking back, she is beyond glad that she allowed her headstrong nature to get the better of her back in those final months of school, when she made the decision, against all other voices in her life, to pursue her dream.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck around these last three and a half months waiting for me to post something! Working on this project of Briar's caravan was really fun and just what I needed to get back into Sylvanians. I'm not too proud of my irregular blogging and am planning to start posting again much more frequently!
I just want to say that I really appreciate everyone who looks at my blog and comments on it! You are all so lovely!

Have a great week!

  1. What a beautiful blog entry, Kelsie! If this is what you produce after your little absence, then you are more than forgiven!

The exterior shots give your story a lovely appearance, and all that artwork is truly impressive. The decor in the caravan and the splendid paintings and drawings are a visual feast. They must have taken a while to create and assemble.

I also love the character of Briar Wildwood and the story you have woven around your pictures. She is an independent and talented bunny.

Thank you for brightening my morning!

    1. Hi Jackson! Thank you so much for your lovely comment! Your words are the most encouraging thing anyone's said to me all week!
I love taking photos of my Sylvanians outside; it just seems to bring them more to life I find! I'm glad you think the decorations in the caravan are effective. You're right; it did take awhile, but I enjoyed every moment!
I often seem to focus on characters that I can relate to in some ways. I must admit Briar's way of life appeals to me abit more than my current school life! She is flattered that you like her artwork!
      You are so welcome Jackson!
Reading these lovely comments has made this rather dismal and tiring day much better!
Have a nice rest of the week!

And the photos of Briar out in her natural habitat are really beautiful.
I'm glad you are feeling inspired again - it is always a pleasure to catch up with our friends from Bluebell Oaks. :)

  3. Hi Kelsie,

What a wonderful story! I missed your entries, and truly enjoyed this one. Briar is such a beautiful, free soul! I loved the decoration in her little caravan, so personal and yet feminine, and reading about her days. I think it was a good idea for her to pursue her own dreams and not follow the aspirations of others. It sounds like she's made quite the good life for herself, and it doesn't seem to be like she needs much in terms of material posessions anyway.

Thank you once again for this lovely story. I hope you're keeping safe and healthy in these difficult times.
Have a great rest of the week.

    1. Hi Ayrell! Thank you for your kind words! I'm so glad you enjoyed my story!
I loved creating Briar's character and lifestyle. It's always so exciting dreaming up a character's personality and life, don't you think?
She is so grateful for your support in her choice of career. She took a big risk because it cost most of her savings to purchase the caravan and decorate it, but she couldn't be happier with the outcome!
I hope that you too are well and happy. These are testing times but we can rest on the assurance that it won't last forever and in a matter of months would have hopefully blown over.
      Stay safe! :)

  4. What a wonderful story, Kelsie! It was woth the wait!

One of your best so far! I actually love all your stories so I´ll probably say the same again in the future.

It was a delight to read and a real pleasure to look at your pictures. They´re amazing! The one where Briar is carrying her basket and the blackberry is brilliant!

There´s something special about sylvanians featured in real nature and Briar seems to belong to it. I couldn´t think of a better place for her to live.
I love her caravan and how she decorated it to suit her style and personality. It feels very cozy.

Her paintings are also very beautiful. I really admire her talent or I´d rather say your talent!
I think you should post this entry in the forum. It´s perfect for one of the lastest challenges: "Art and artists".

Thank you so much for sharing this story! While I was reading it I felt I was in the middle of the forest. You manged to create the right atmosphere with your writing and your pictures.

Here in Spain we´re in lockdown, as in many other parts of the world. I wonder how the situation is in your country. I haven´t left my home since the 11th of March and we have to stay indoors until the 26th of April. I really hope things improve a bit, otherwise we´ll have to keep in lockdown for longer. That´s why your story was a bit of a fresh air, an open window to nature. You helpedd me escape from the walls of my living room from a while .We live in a flat so we don´t have a garden for the kids to play outside.

At least, our sylvanians are lucky to live in such an ideal "virus free world" at the moment!

    Take care, Kelsie!

    1. Thank you so much Cutata! Reading all these kind comments always brighten my day! It's such a compliment to me that you enjoy my stories because I really think your blog is amazing!
I really had alot of fun taking the photos for this story, because I find taking my Sylvanians outside just seems to bring them almost to life! I must thank you for the basket, because I used one of your earlier tutorials to make it.
Briar says 'thank you very much!' She is so flattered that you like her paintings and is getting so much support! It's really helping to boost her creativity and confidence.
I'm so glad my story could be of help to you! Perhaps I will post it on the forum!
New Zealand is in lockdown too. We are unsure when it will end but many people think four weeks will not be long enough. I haven't been out since March 21st, but thankfully I live out in the country so I have a block of land to roam and be outside. I will be thinking of you and your family, and people in similar situations, as I know I would find being inside for weeks very tough!
I believe we can still have peace through this difficult time. Of course it's lovely we can escape to the wonderful world of Sylvania!
Hope you are safe and well! Blessings on you and your family!

  5. Thank you Kelsie, such a beautiful story of Briar, a free spirit. A lot of us wish we could do just that, to follow our heart's desire, enjoy a simple peaceful life out with nature. Well done bringing Briar to life in such a way with all the beauty you created and the sounds which come alive. You are so talented in your creation and production of your stories and I think this could be a future career prospect for you. All your stories are great and I especially like Briar Wildwood and her tranquil life in such a beautiful wood. The paintings Briar creates - no wonder her work is in such demand. xx

    1. Thank you for your lovely words Pamela. I'm so glad you enjoyed the story!
I think that if I had to live a life like Briar's I wouldn't be upset at all! In fact, it's rather appealing. Perhaps she is based on parts of me!
It seems the demand for Briar's art is growing every time she makes a trip into the village to sell them! The villagers were shocked and delighted to learn that they had such a talented artist in their midst!
Thank you again for your kind words! Have a great rest of the week!
